Young people, the South Coastal Trail is for your
generation
...so tell the older generation to get it
built!
Kids support extending the Coastal Trail along the coast from
Kincaid to Potter Marsh because it will be:
Safely away from traffic. A Coastal Trail is safe because it is
away from traffic. Even the littlest kids can use it. Older kids can
use it without parents or adults.
Exciting. At trail along the coast is more exciting for kids than
a trail along city roads. Kids like to see the tides, wildlife, and
sunsets.
The city is getting crowded. 80,000 more residents are predicted
to live in Anchorage by year 2020. Neighborhoods, roads, and parks
will be much more crowded. The south Coastal Trail will let kids and
families enjoy open space and nature within the city.
We may lose other trails, so we need to extend the Coastal Trail.
Trails at Bartlett and APU are not on parkland, so the land could be
developed for other uses. Some of the Kincaid trails are on Airport
land and could be lost. Spencer Loop could be lost when Hilltop
expands. Trails in Far North Bicentennial Park could be affected by
road extensions.
Makes recreation cheap, easy, fun! A Coastal trail serves bikers,
in-line skaters, skiers, walkers, runners. It is free to use, any
season, any time, solo or with a group of friends!
It's an investment for all kids. This trail connects to many
neighborhoods and schools, from Kincaid to Bayshore to Ocean View to
Rabbit Creek. Other trails from all parts of the city will connect to
it. If the city can build Little League ballfields for 600 kids, it
should build a trail along the coast that tens of thousands of kids
can use, forever.
There is funding especially to build this trail. The South
Coastal Trail can be built with 91 percent federal funds that are
dedicated only for trails. This trail will not take away funds from
schools or other services!
Kids can support the south extension of the Coastal Trail along
the coast from Kincaid to Potter Marsh by: getting signatures from
friends and teammates, writing a letter-to-the-editor, or E-mailing
