We understand Mayor Weurch is circulating a letter on funding that intends to kill (the Coastal Trail Extension Project).
As a professional engineer and former chief engineer for the city, I can assure you the cost savings and property impact reductions in this press release are real, achievable, and reasonable ideas that have been worked in some detail by engineers and construction volunteers.
This project is on AMATS second to Ship Ck Trail and can be built in phases to avoid wiping out all funding for years, counter to what Mayor Weurch alleges. What we need now is leadership to find a way to say 'yes' rather than finding more roadblocks to keep saying no. This project will be Anchorage's reason to call itself a world class city.
Please note that the South Addition Community Council and eleven other community councils have passed resolutions supporting the coastal trail routing along the coast.
A word of support from you would be appreciated.
Also, please oppose SB 71, which caps trail funding at 10%, less that the current 15%. This will affect South Coastal Trail funding.
And lastly, please oppose HB 48 and SB 23, which restrict use of the Anchorage Wildlife Coastal Refuge for trails.
